Resolutions....

First and foremost....
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OF YOU!
May 2011 bring you much joy, good health, love and success.

New York City 1907

It's that time of year again where we all start thinking and
maybe even planning our new years resolutions.
I haven't fully decided on my personal resolutions....
(have some ideas, the usual...lose weight, exercise more, save money etc. etc...)
but I think we have come up with some for Bee & Mason.

1. Continue to support our expansion.
2. Plan and prepare for each month before it gets here.
3. Participate in at least one show this year.
4.  Finalize our logo and update our blog and start a facebook page.
5. Do a better job anticipating our customers needs.
(might need a magical eight ball for this one but worth a shot)

Of course these are prelimenary resolutions,
until we can sit down and really put our heads together and
decide concretely what they will be.
This of course will be done over cocktails. It only seems right.

We hope that you have thought and pondered your own new years resolutions
and found a direction that you can keep and be true to your selves.

Happy New Year!

Windows....

In NYC there is a store that always captures my imagination.
Bergdorf Goodman...
They do an amazing job with their windows.
It is one of my first stops when I visit
the city.
You will often find me watching the team
set their windows with the most beautiful
arrangements of vintage and antique props,
couture gowns and paper done in ways never imagined
until this team gets a hold of.
It is pure magic...

Grapes....

There is a "flea"market once a month in Portland
I try to never miss for many reasons,
but one of them is you never know what kind of
treasure you are going to find on the $1 tables.
Really, there are $1 tables with the most wonderful treasures.

This time I found wonderful kitschy Christmas, old
Christmas cards and these lovely beauties.

Grapes!

Hand crocheted, bottle cap grapes with leaves and all.
I couldn't believe it and in the most amazing condition.
I bought almost all of them and in the process had a lovely
conversation with a man who's friend loves textile and craft
history and had taught himself how to make these.
He begged me to buy them all before his friend saw how cheap
they were. I obliged.

They are now going to be a Christmas present for someone
(can't tell you who incase she reads this)
and I kept the little red one. It fit into the current
decor of the house.

I know I should probably put these in the shop
but sometimes you just have to treat yourself.

Muse....

Our muse's come at different times and in different forms during our lives.
I found something, well it's more like someone the other day while out shopping.
I wasn't looking for her, not by a long shot
but she was just there waiting to be taken home.
I really couldn't believe I was picking her up.
But there I was with her in my hands asking
"how much?'

She must have been quite a beauty at one time.
Now she looks a little worse for wear.
I think she is just beautiful in a tragic way.
There is something in her face, how she tries to hold her
dress up as it slips from her torso, and her wind swept hair.
She is flush, maybe from embarrassment she isn't what she use to be.
Her lips are still perfect and she wears her bling with pride.
You can see in her old, tattered crepe dress what glory it once was.

I think she is just perfect.
She sits on my dining room table right now, and everytime I walk by
she makes me smile and I have these wonderful creative
thoughts that I swear come from her.

I would have liked to have known her in her glory days
but I think it wouldn't be the same.
Our muse's come to us when they see fit, not when we do.

Dictionary....

I can't spell to save my life
well maybe to save my life
but the dictionary on my iphone is a good friend
and spell check, well have no idea what we did with out it.

I was out shopping for the store this weekend and came across
an old dictionary that looked like it was the good companion of a young girl.

Copy write 1926

They were friends for at least 5 years.

She got it as a gift when she was 12

Age 17

When you look at it you imagine she may have even treated
it like a diary of sorts.
It is well loved and respected.
True friends.

She wrote in handwriting each word at the top of most pages.

The only thing colored in were plants and flowers. Did she have a love for plants?

A lost art.
A dictionary, hard bound in leather,
filled with that onion skin thin paper with a beautiful font
opening the secrets of the English language.

Hmmm!
What secrets it must have held for her.

Creativity....

I love the fact that we are all creative in some form or fashion.
After my post last week about Advent calendars
I got two text messages from my sister
sharing our own family creativity for Advent.

The first came from my 6 year old nephew, Tyler.
He decided he wanted to make his own Advent wreath.

He made it from things he found in the yard and around the house.
Once he finished it he presented it to his mom as their
advent wreath for the Christmas season.

The second text was a photo of a advent calendar
my mom made for my nephew.
My sister had seen something similar and had
asked my mom if she could make one.
So she did.

She knitted each mitten and then strung them up.
My sister puts a little treat each day in the next mitten.
There is one a little larger than the rest, this one happens to
be on Tyler's birthday.
I've asked my mom for one for my own house for next Christmas.
She might even knit some extra for Bee & Mason
so you can have one to.

Advent....

Advent....
I remember it fondly.
My dad always bought us a Advent calendar.
My sister and I looked forward to every morning when we got
to open another day on the calendar and there was
always a piece of chocolate.
Now we only got one calendar that we had to share.
Usually we would swap every other day to open a window
and we always split the piece of chocolate.
This worked pretty well.
If we didn't share my dad got the chocolate and let me tell you
we weren't going to let that happen.

Similar to what we had as kids.

I started thinking if I were to hang a Advent calendar
today what would it look like.

Love the use of old lace.

What if you used old burlap bags and vintage flour sacks.

Use a different language for December each day.

Could you use old school pennants?

If not artistic what about old cards, stamps or kids artwork.

Love the rustic feel (from Pottery Barn)

We all have old trinkets laying around, make ornaments and assign them to days on the calendar.

What would yours look like?

Holidays....

We made it through another Thanksgiving
with full stomachs and much to be thankful for.

Before the Turkey was roasted and the gravy was made
Meeghn and I worked like little elves in Santa's shop
getting our new expanded space ready for the holidays.
If you want to ask me I think it looks pretty darn good
for our first holiday season.
Enough suspense here are some pictures.

The space

A little bit of  elegance with whimsy

Pure vintage

For the child in all of us.

Great for gift toppers or just making cookies.

Silver for Christmas dinner.

Grandma's coming to town.

Entertaining.

A touch of green.

Gold for the glitz of it.

Warm plaids and baskets full of yarn.

Fido.

Every party girl needs a place to sit and rest.

Lets celebrate!
Be sure to stop by on your holiday shopping trips at
to see all of our wonderful holiday treasures
perfect for entertaining and everyone on your list.

Happy Shopping!
